Fake worship or real, what's the difference?
The real thing
Sometimes a good way to spot real worship is to know what the fake worship looks like.
The next couple links contain Scriptures that help us understand the difference.
The fake thing
“But” is an important word – so verse 24 is the real point.
What’s more important to God the inward or the outward?
The inward did not match the outward. Outwardly things looked good, but inwardly they lacked justice and righteousness.
It is possible to do the right things, but without justice and righteousness. That’s a really big thought – what does it look like?
When I do that I’m cheating God – loving Him in one place, but not every place.
That's fake worship.
Or when someone points out something in my life where I’ve been unfair or treated someone badly, I SHOULD respond humbly.
I don’t ignore them and I take to heart what they said in order to change being just and right.
Verse 23 “Away with the noise of your songs! I will not listen to the music of your harps”.
That’s amazing – God listens to music. . . our music. . . when?
When my life follows His purposes of justice and righteousness.
Here we are with our small list of songs, and as much as we’d love to do a lot more types of songs, God says that’s not as important as my life being characterized by justice and righteousness.
If I don’t want to fake worship – I need to know… what does God-worship consist of?
The real thing - two parts
God-honoring worship consists of 2 things, not just one. Perhaps we are more comfortable with the truth part of this than the spirit part.
Our story in Daniel highlights the need for truth and worshiping God in light of the truth of who He is. The difference is that with the truth then engaging our lives and emotions founded on truth is a life-changing combination.
The Message paraphrase says it this way: "It's who you are and the way you live that count before God. Your worship must engage your spirit in the pursuit of truth.
The kind of people the Father is looking for: those who are simply and honestly themselves before him in their worship. God is sheer being itself—Spirit.
Those who worship him must do it out of their very being, their spirits, their true selves, in adoration."
If I can’t be honest in worship –
If I can’t engage my spirit in the pursuit of truth – am I just faking it?
