ORGANIST POSITION – FEBRUARY 2011

ORGANIZATION: Pond Street Baptist Church, 75 Chester Avenue, Providence, Rhode Island 02907. St. David’s is located across from the St. Joseph's Hospital, off Broad Street, on Chester Avenue. We are an equal opportunity employer and a warm and welcoming congregation.

POSITION: Organist and accompanist to choir. Some directing is a future possibility.

STARTING DATE: Immediately! Following 2011. This position is a year-round position. Employment conditional on background check.

QUALIFICATIONS: Competency in church organ and piano. Our church uses choral music and hymns from both classical and contemporary composers, gospel music folk and African music; organist should expect to see new music regularly. Experience as a church organist and/or familiarity with liturgical worship are desired but are not requirements.

INSTRUMENT: The organ at the Pond Street Baptist Church is a Hammond A305 church organ. The Hammond A305 church organ not only can faithfully reproduce the Vintage Tone Wheel sound, but it also contains a complete General MIDI library consisting of over 270 high-quality digitally sampled sound such as Stereo Grand Piano and Stereo Strings.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
(1) Play for choir rehearsal at 11:30 AM Saturday mornings (6 hours) and for the service at 10:30 AM (usually 3 hour 20 minutes). The service usually includes hymns, service music, a choir anthem, praise and worship and a
prelude and postlude.
(2) Play for these seasonal services: Christmas Eve (1), Christmas (1), Church Anniversary(1).

(3) Accompany the choir for two or three special programs during the year.
(4) The organist has first call to play for funerals or weddings (none in 2010), to be paid by the families concerned.
(5) It is our practice at the Pond Street Baptist Church for all our musicians to work together as a team to offer seasonal, appropriate, well-presented music for worship. Our organist will be asked to receive and offer suggestions concerning hymns, musical styles, and projects, and will be working with the pastor, the Director of Music, solo and ensemble instrumentalists, and members of the Worship and Music Committee.

Location: Pond Street Baptist Church
Compensation: TERMS: We are able to offer remuneration of $225.00 per combined rehearsal and service, paid semimonthly, and $50.00 for extra rehearsals as negotiated. We are flexible if a vacation Sunday is needed, asking for notification three weeks in advance when possible. When needing to be absent for other reasons, we ask that the organist arrange for a substitute or give four weeks notification.
