Music Director

Blacksburg Presbyterian Church in Blacksburg VA, a 500-member and growing congregation of the Presbyterian Church USA, is seeking a part time Music Director (20 hrs./wk., nominally) to replace a highly respected incumbent who is retiring. This job was previously advertised and has been reopened.
The director is responsible for to the integration of music into the life of the congregation, with the objective of extending and maintaining a creative music program of superior quality.
Major responsibilities include:
* Training, rehearsing and directing the adult and bell choirs
* Playing the organ for Sunday worship and other services
* Selecting music (in conjunction with the pastors)
* Recruiting new/additional singers and bell ringers
* Selecting and coordinating visiting musicians and volunteers
The successful candidate for this position will be a well-qualified musician who is professionally trained and experienced in church music, with demonstrated competence and excellence in the areas of responsibility listed above.
Additionally, BPC’s Music Director will be expected to have a commitment to Jesus Christ, which will be expressed by a willingness to work with the pastors and people in the total witness and mission of the Blacksburg Presbyterian Church. He or she must be sensitive to the Reformed tradition of worship, able to communicate energy and enthusiasm in recruiting and leading choir members, and cooperative with other staff members.
Currently, BPC has a single worship service on Sunday morning but candidates must be open to the possibility of a second service being added in the future. And while involvement in musical programming for children and youth is not a requirement for this position, interest, competence and experience in these areas will be considered a distinct plus.
The position can be divided into two parts, with organist and possibly bell choir responsibilities as a separate function requiring 6-8 hours per week. BPC’s pipe organ is a well-maintained Holtkamp with 23 ranks and two manuals.
