Purpose:
Newell Presbyterian Church has been called by the Holy Spirit to worship God, to proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ, to minister to the community, to develop disciples, and to promote peace and justice. Our MISSION is that GOD’S LOVE may abound more and more in our community and in the world.
The Choir Director / Accompanist is to work with the Pastor and other musicians so that people of all ages and backgrounds might better experience the love of God in Jesus Christ through music that connects with their life and moves their soul.
Qualifications:
1. Deeply committed and mature Christian.
2. Appreciates Presbyterian Reformed Theology which emphasizes God’s sovereign love for the entire world and the priesthood of all believers.
3. Knowledge of church music and the place of music in worship.
4. Skill in playing the piano and some ability in playing the organ.
5. Skill in choir techniques, voice training, and choir directing.
6. Committed to an environment of shared leadership to help create a blended worship service, which incorporates traditional hymns, spirituals, modern-day hymns, contemporary praise songs, old gospel classics, and music from other cultures.
7. Creative and eager to take some initiative with new ideas.
8. Good organizational, leadership, and people skills.
Responsibilities:
1. Meet or communicate with the pastor once a week to plan upcoming worship services.
2. Confer with the pastor about the music to be sung by the congregation.
3. Provide anthems and other musical offerings appropriate for each particular service.
4. Accompany the music for the regular Sunday worship services and other services approved by the Session.
5. Be available or be able to secure a substitute to play for funerals and weddings in the church.
6. Utilize the musical talents of individuals in our congregation whenever possible.
7. Direct the adult voice choir. Hold regular rehearsals weekly with the development and growth of the choir a continuing goal. Extra rehearsals may be necessary for special occasions.
8. Prepare and lead the choir for their annual Christmas concert.
9. Recruit new choir members and encourage regular attendance of all members.
10. Support and work with the handbell choir, the children’s choir, and other musicians, as needed
11. Share new and creative ideas to enhance the worship environment and take direction from the Pastor.
Evaluation:
Accountable for excellence under the supervision of the pastor. After a formal review process, the personnel committee will make recommendations to the Session.
Compensation:
This is a part-time position, about 10-12 hours a week, with three time commitments: 1) Sunday worship service at 11:00 am. 2) Choir practice on Wednesdays at 7:00 pm, and 3) a Weekly meeting with the pastor at a mutually convenient time. Depending upon a diverse musical background and experience, salary is between $15,000 to $17,000 per year (or about $288 to $325 per week.)
