PURPOSE: The Director of Music and the Arts provides leadership for our dynamic music and arts ministries to deepen the worship, community and outreach life through St. James Presbyterian Church toward the fulfillment of its vision.
ACCOUNTABILITY: The Director of Music and the Arts is accountable to the Pastor/Head of Staff and to the Session through the Human Resources Team.
RELATIONSHIPS: The Director of Music and the Arts must have a personal dynamic relationship with Jesus Christ; and must have a high value of building healthy relationships, community, collaboration and teams. He or she will serve collaboratively with the SJ staff and leadership, providing leadership to the music and arts ministry.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Music and Arts
? Serve as a member of the Worship Team, leading in their strategizing, planning, coordination and evaluation of the Music and Arts ministry.
? Plan and oversee excellence in the development, rehearsals and presentations of choirs, ensembles, bell choir(s), soloists and other artistic expressions.
? Work with the staff and Worship Team in designing and implementing of meaningful, innovative, creative, experiential, transformational Christian worship services. Coordinate music and arts for all services.
? Design, plan and prepare special programming for Christmas and Easter.
? Oversee and direct the integration of a variety of music and artistic expressions to inspire meaningful worship experiences in support of worship/preaching themes.
? Oversee St. James? music and arts in worship, fellowship and outreach.
? Develop and coordinate Children and Youth music ministry.
? Encourage the development of new innovative expressions of the arts.
Administration
? Vitally collaborate in weekly staff meetings and function as a part of the staff team.
? Actively participate in weekly worship planning meetings, providing musical and arts creative leadership and input that supports the planning of worship.
? Oversee development of annual music and arts planning calendar for worship.
? Oversee Sunday morning worship preparation through coordination of necessary material for worship bulletins, physical staging for music and the arts in the services and media needs.
? Oversee and supervise music and media ministry (e.g. sound, projection, etc.) ensuring support for all worship services, funerals, weddings and special services.
? Provide staff support and liaison for the Concert Series ministry.
? Assist the Worship elders in developing the budget for the Worship and Arts ministry, including overseeing the purchase, maintenance and repair of musical instruments, coordinating the procurement and maintenance of sound equipment, supervising the maintenance of, and additions to the music libraries and contracting with outside musicians and other worship artists as required.
? Work with the Worship Elders to identify, recruit, develop and support individuals for the Worship Team and various music and arts ministry teams.
? Implement specific programs and responsibilities as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS
? Committed to living as a growing follower and representative of Jesus with a commitment to the fulfillment of the Great Commandment and Great Commission.
? Person of high moral character, integrity and compassion.
? Proven experience in choral and instrumental direction toward musical excellence for the purpose of leading the congregation in worship.
? Strong vocal and musicianship skills for worship leadership.
? Have a strong vision for music and arts in worship, and be able to work in a variety of musical styles appropriate to a dynamic variety of worship opportunities, services and cultures; able to envision and lead creative and visual arts including drama and multimedia.
? Have a proven leadership ability to facilitate growth toward spiritual maturity and artistic excellence among all members of the worship and arts ministry.
? Have a proven ability to develop and manage a music and arts ministry that is Christ-centered and consistent with the St. James Mission statement.
? Five or more years of experience in worship and music ministry is desired.
? Demonstrates excellent oral, written and non-verbal communications skills.
? Able to communicate effectively, with care and compassion, one-on-one and in group facilitation.
? Excellent interpersonal, leadership and organizational skills.
? Embraces the church?s vision and core values; participates with staff in leading organizational development across the entire church; is a team player.
EVALUATION:
The Pastor/Head of Staff reviews performance and compensation for this position annually, with appropriate input from the Human Resources Team.
COMPENSATION:
This is a full-time, non-ordained position. Salary is determined based on qualifications, experience and education.
